Program Requirements
Following is a partial overview of important information, and follow the detailed instructions in the attached graduate school guidelines.
Master’s Program Major Requirements
  • Students should acquire the required course credits within 2 to 3 years (excluding leave of absence).
  • Students majoring in clinical and counseling psychology should earn 30 credits or more, while other fields require 24 credits or more.
  • Students should earn 6 credits of thesis research course. 3 credits could be earned per each semester.
  • Advanced Psychological Statistics (207.501) is a mandatory course that must be completed.
  • Credits from other departments should be limited to 50% or less of the total credits required for graduation, excluding thesis research course credits.
The purpose of this regulation is to ensure that graduate students in the Department of Psychology take an adequate number of major courses in psychology. For instance, in the case of Master's Program (non-clinical majors), a minimum of 9 credits in psychology major courses (excluding research thesis courses) out of the required 24 credits should be taken.
  • To have credits earned from other departments recognized as major courses, they must be classified as 'Major Electives' or 'Major Required' courses in the graduate school curriculum. (Occasionally, there may be courses from other graduate programs that are classified under different names, such as 'General Electives,' 'Common Competencies,' or 'Education,' and these courses will not be recognized as completion credits.)
However, the course "Principles and Applications of Data Science (M2480.001100)" can be recognized as necessary credits for graduation upon consultation with the advisor (applied retroactively starting from the 2nd semester of the 2021 academic year, based on the decision made in the Departmental Faculty Meeting in September 2022).
Ph.D. Program Major Requirements
  • Students should acquire the required course credits within 2 to 5 years (excluding leave of absence).
  • Students should earn 36 credits or more after entering the Ph.D. program. For students majoring in clinical and counseling psychology, however, only credits exceeding 30 from the recognized master's program credits will be recognized as doctoral program credits.
  • All doctoral courses in one’s major field and at least two courses in one’s minor field (master's or doctoral level) should be taken. However, if you choose clinical/counseling as your minor field, you must take at least three courses, with a minimum of one course from each of the ‘evaluation’, ‘pathology’, and ‘therapy’ domains, in consultation with your primary advisor and the professor of the chosen minor field.
  • Students should earn 12 credits of thesis research course. 3 credits could be earned per each semester.
  • Advanced Psychological Statistics (207.501) is a mandatory course that must be completed. If you have already earned credits for this course during the master's program, it will be recognized as having fulfilled the requirement for the mandatory course.
  • Credits from other departments should be limited to 50% or less of the total credits required for graduation, excluding thesis research course credits.
