What is Psychology?

Psychology investigates human behavior and mind using scientific approach.

  • Differences Between Psychology and Other Humanities and Social Sciences

While disciplines such as art, religion, and humanities mainly use non-empirical and logic-based descriptive methods, psychology investigates human behavior and mind through empirically falsifiable hypothesis and quantitative methodologies. Furthermore, while sociology, economics, and various social sciences seek to understand humans through macro-level social structures, contexts, or cultures, psychology focuses on the internal factors of individuals and investigates universal principles that explain human mind and behavior.

  • Active Integrations and Interactions with Other Disciplines

According to the research on the relationships among modern sciences, psychology is situated at the intersection of natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities (Boyack et al., 2005). In line with this, the Department of Psychology at Seoul National University actively collaborates with other related fields (i.e., linguistics, neuroscience, computer science, and philosophy), contributing to a deeper understanding of human beings.

Furthermore, the Seoul National University Department of Psychology is actively utilizing the rapidly advancing information technology, particularly Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence, to broaden the understanding of human behavior in novel ways. By integrating and connecting various disciplines, the department is at the forefront of creating new interdisciplinary fields in the realm of converging sciences.
