A timely and proactive reaction is critical for addressing unfairness, especially for lower-class individuals since they face unfair situations more frequently than higher-class individuals. Thus, one might expect that those in lower social class would respond more actively in order to correct unfairness. However, the present research shows why the opposite might be the case. Specifically, we found that, compared to higher-class participants, lower-class participants were less likely to perceive them unfair when they received lopsidedly disadvantageous offers. Moreover, we show that lower-class individuals feel less control over shaping outcomes in their lives, which leads them to react less proactively to unfair treatment. For example, the reduced sense of control makes them less likely to take actions such as participating in political processes or rejecting unfair offers. Finally, lower-class participants prefer to exit rather than voice when they are treated unfairly in an organization. All in all, our findings suggest that lower-class contexts may foster psychological responses to unfair treatment that can perpetuate, or even exacerbate, existing unfairness.
